Student Home Insurance

As a student you might need to stay away from your home, either in one of the halls of residence or in a rented apartment off campus. In most cases it may not be a private apartment where it’s only you who will be staying in; rather you will have to live with other fellow students in shared apartment. But in either case you must have all the possessions required for your studies and also for personal living such as books, computer or laptop, calculators and scientific instruments, mobile phone, dresses, music system and many more. Moreover, since you are not earning and presently dependent upon your parents or the University scholarship, you will have limited finances to manage everything in the most economic way.

But what will happen if all your possessions are lost? Stolen from your apartment, or destroyed by fire? Or your landlord asks for replacement of all the damages that have been caused to him due to your negligence? What if your iron catches fire and your room partner’s books catch fire? Sorry, you don’t have any ‘scholarship’ to meet these expenses. Nor can you ask your parents to pay for the hefty damages. Instead you have an easy solution that will protect you against these worst situations – buying student home insurance.

Student home insurance is specially designed for students and covers all the important possessions that are required for their studies and living. If you are a student staying away from your home, getting a student insurance policy is most important to protect all the valuable things you own, for you cannot take any chance of losing them. Imagine what will happen if anything worst happens and your most important possessions are damaged or you loose them. More than the costs involved, you will receive tremendous setback where your studies will be affected greatly, not to mention the personal life. However by paying few dollars annually and getting a student insurance policy, you can meet such disasters easily.

There are many insurance companies that offer student home insurance, therefore all the policies are not same. Before you buy a policy, spend some time to understand the coverage provided by few such policies and also compare the benefits offered by each and their premiums. Sometimes finding student home insurance is difficult if you stay in rented accommodation, and if the accommodation is in a flat rather than in a cottage, it will be more difficult. This is because insurance companies consider such accommodation to be more risky than isolated houses. However, since most of the students usually stay in flats, insurers are offering more policies to these students. Considering the increasing competition in student insurance market you also have the advantage to bargain with few companies to get a good deal.

Some home insurance policies cover the possessions of member of a family if he/she is a student and stays away from home, but the coverage is more limited compared to student home insurance. During you stay away from home, you may be visiting to your parents on certain occasions, on holidays or may be on weekends. But your rented apartment will be at risk of theft or even of other accidents, may be fire or water leakage. Some policies cover these risks when you are on vacations for specific period and keep you free from the risk of losing things during your absence. If you ever need to change your temporary residence, your policy will cover your possessions during such moves.

A major problem many students face while staying in shared houses or flats is loss of money and credit card. If one of your room partners uses your credit card without your knowledge, you will be left with a high payment liability. You can make claims for these losses if you have a student home policy. Another major thing that needs great care is the library books that you have hired, which are often quite expensive. Losing those books and not able to make payment for them will directly hamper your scholarship. But if you have a policy, it will keep away such odds and protect you against these situations.

As a student you have limited financial resources, but you are required to pay for everything that’s demanded by your studies. At the same time you can’t afford to divert your time and attention for the security of your possessions. Therefore, having student insurance policy on your side, you can concentrate on your studies while the policy takes care of your possession and protects you in any worst situation.
