Special Insurance Types

A standard homeowners’ insurance policy does not provide coverage to all kinds of damages to your home and other belongings. Most insurance companies offer their policies in the form of packages covering several damages and/or resulting law suits together. While all the individual coverage under the package are clearly stated in the policy document, it is your responsibility to read the policy document properly and understand the various coverage that you will get in the event of any damage to your home. If you are not aware of the protections that your policy provides you won’t be able to make the rightful claims. And more than that you will find yourself in a devastated condition after losing your valuable possessions although you had a policy but cannot make a claim!

Before buying a homeowners policy it is utmost necessary to read the policy document properly. There are various types of policies and one policy may serve your purpose better than the other. Therefore going through several policies will help you to compare the protections each of them offers and also to buy the most suitable policy. It is better to consider your coverage requirements before you buy an insurance policy. This is important because once you have purchased your policy, changing it into another policy will not be free from hassles. But what if you already have a policy and you find that it doesn’t give adequate coverage? You will probably decide to cancel the existing policy and buy a new one, won’t you? But you still have some better alternatives to consider! You can simply include additional home insurance coverage to get maximum protection.

Whether you already have a policy or just planning to buy one, it is always advisable to make an exhaustive list of items you want coverage for. The list might include your house, the possessions therein including valuables and items of daily use, and other liabilities (such as impending legal issues). Don’t forget to include the contingency expenses that you might be incurring in the event of any mishap and also all kinds of financial loses such as loss of rent or other income from the property. Now compare the list with your policy and find out whether your existing policy covers all or most of the items in the list or not. In case it does, you better off since you don’t need to worry about the dangers that may damage your home since your loss has been covered. However if many of the perils are out of coverage it is wise to complement the existing policy with additional coverage.

There are some special coverage that is not offered by the standard insurance policies, such as flood insurance, earthquake insurance and termite insurance. However protections from these perils are available in the form of additional coverage.

Flood insurance is not offered as a part of the regular homeowners insurance. Instead you need to buy flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program or few private insurance companies that offer coverage for flooding. You may save few bucks by not buying flood insurance, but in the event of a flood you might loose thousands or even millions of dollars for not having flood insurance! Therefore buying flood insurance will give you that extra protection and peace of mind.

Earthquakes, though not a regular incident, can be devastating and ruin your entire house and everything that you have. Not only does it take all your savings and even force you to borrow for rebuilding the damaged house, but also cause you to spend more during the interim period. While the regular homeowners insurance does not give protection against earthquakes, you can buy earthquake insurance separately to have a protection in advance. If you live in an earthquake designated zone it is advisable to get earthquake insurance so that you don’t regret if the worst happen.

Termites are a menace that works like a silent killer! You have been living in a house for few years and there have been absolutely no harm to any of your possessions. However one day you suddenly open your wardrobe and find that many expensive clothes are damaged by termites, or that your rare collection of books are turned into mud. To save your valuable garments, books, furniture and even the beams and wooden panels of your house from termite damages, you can get termite insurance. A better part of termite insurance is that these insurance are also offered by many pest control companies in addition to insurance companies and you can have a great deal from one of them.

Insurance is meant to cover the losses so that we are not left with nothing if any unforeseen incident occurs and your house or belongings are damaged. Therefore you must consider getting maximum coverage and if your existing policy is not adequate, buying additional coverage is the next best thing for you.
