Liability Coverage

Liability coverage is a kind of insurance that protects the policy holder against financial liabilities arising out of incidents which he/she is held responsible for. Sometimes there occur some incidents which you were never prepared for, and all of a sudden you realize that you are gripped into huge financial liability. There is a party at your home and the house is crowded with guests, and suddenly a guest falls in the washroom and needs to be taken to the hospital. Your child is playing on the lawn with his friends and one of then hurts himself by the fences. You had taken your dog for a walk and it bites a person. A tree in your garden fell down and destroyed the cables of your locality. There are many such cases that can happen where you are held directly responsible for; you are sued and the court slaps damage charges upon you.

While liability coverage is provided by some homeowners’ insurance policies, you will need to get liability coverage if you don’t have any of those policies. With liability insurance on your side, it’s not only you who will be protected but your entire family will be protected against various liabilities. This insurance covers the liabilities in the event of damages caused to someone’s property or when someone is hurt by your action. Many people do not want to socialize or avoid inviting people to their homes fearing that some unwarranted incident might entangle them into legal suits and consequential financial liabilities. But comprehensive liability insurance can remove these obstacles and allow you to socialize with people, going around with your pets and also invite friends and relatives to your house. So next time you just don’t need to bother about your child’s friends when they are all playing on the lawn or when your pet bites another person or even your tree has damaged the cables. You can easily meet these liabilities once you have liability insurance.

But what exactly these liabilities are? What kind of coverage you will be getting? Apart from the damages caused within your premises or those caused by your family members or pet, what are the other liabilities that are covered? What if your child kicks the ball and it breaks your neighbor’s window glass? Or if he damages a fan in his school? What about the medical bills when a guest is seriously hurt in your house and admitted to the hospital? Well, all these liabilities are covered by your liability insurance. A standard liability insurance provides coverage for three broad categories: personal liability, damages to property of others and medical payments for injuries to others. Most of the liabilities are covered under one or the other category, thus you get protection for a wide range of liabilities. Often it happens that we unknowingly speak of anything and face charges of defamation, slander and mental anguish. This is also quite common in cases where damage is made to another person and there is exchange of heated arguments. However, you can protect yourself from these situations as well just by adding an ‘umbrella policy’ along with your liability insurance.

With growing tensions in our everyday life, legal issues have become quite a common thing. People who have been your close friend, near relative or good neighbor may turn out to be persons giving you the worries of a lifetime in case they receive any damage you were responsible for. Therefore it’s always wise to be prepared before any such incident happens and your family suffers financial crisis. With liability insurance policy you can live with the assurance that someone will be there to stand by your side in the event of a worst incident. So call your insurance agent if you still don’t have this insurance before you face any liability lawsuit.
